The Moscow administration has decided to open a consulate in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.
Before Vladimir Putin's visit to Turkey, Russia made a decision that will significantly affect relations with Turkey. Moscow has announced to the world about the step it will take regarding the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC). According to the Russian press, a Russian consulate will be opened in the TRNC.
The TASS news agency reported that the Russian Embassy in South Cyprus will soon begin providing consular services in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.
The news agency reports that an embassy source said: "In the very near future, we will start offering consular services in the northern part of the city of Nicosia."
Russia is the second country after Turkey to recognize the TRNC!
The Russian Ambassador to South Cyprus said: “The decision to provide consular services in the northern part of Cyprus (in the TRNC) has no political meaning / implication and was due to the needs of the Russians in Northern Cyprus,” —
Russia's decision to open a consulate caused a wide public outcry. Having taken this step, Russia became the second country after Turkey to recognize the TRNC. According to the data received, more than 50,000 Russian citizens live in the north of the island.
