Vouni Palace | Guzelyurt | Cyprus

Mysterious ruins of Vouni palace are located on hilltop at an altitude of 250 meters above sea level. The palace was built by pro-Persian king Doxandros to overlook the nearby town of Soli, which the king wished to keep under control. The palace was destroyed in a fire by the people of Soli in 380 BC and was never used again. Archaeological excavations carried out by Swedish archaeologists have shown that the oldest remains of the palace belong to the 5th century BC. Palace, as we have the opportunity to see it today, is situated on three terraces and on the very top of which are the scanty remains of an ancient palace. On the central terrace are 137 rooms of the palace, and in the immediate vicinity – the remains of a temple. Facing the sea, the lower terrace of the palace consists of stone houses in which lived majority of the population. During excavations of the palace, archaeologists found clay pots that were not destroyed by fire. Contents of the pots became known as the "Vouni Treasure" there were gold and silver bracelets and other jewelry, as well as hundreds of coins with the seals of Paphos, Marion, Kition, and Lapithos.
