Monastery of St. Mamas | city Guzelyurt | Cyprus

Church and Icon Museum is situated within the Monastery complex next door to the Archeology and Natural History Museum. Several significant icons and other artifacts are on display here. The original church was built on the site of a pagan temple, Gothic architectural elements were added in the 15th century, and the dome in the 18th century. The church interior is well preserved, and now plays the role of the iconic museum. The upper part of the iconostasis bears some of the hallmarks of the Venetian and Lusignan periods, and is fine example of the late 16th century woodcarving. Many icons display Mamas as shepherd with lamb in his arms, who sits on the back of a lion. Image is an interpretation of the life of a poor shepherd, who due to his courage and kindness was elevated to the status of saints. The church houses the sarcophagus of St. Mamas, who is the patron saint of the poor people of Cyprus. After the Ottoman Empire came to power in Cyprus, Turkish soldiers, convinced that there were treasure hidden in the coffin, bored holes in its side, at which a sort of nectar oozed out, thus terrifying the desecrators into desisting. Nectar appears at unpredictable time intervals, and as legend has it, helps with pain in the ears, and has the property to calm the stormy sea, if it poured onto the waves. On the outer western wall of the church you can see a picture of St. Mamas on a lion.
